Frequently Asked Questions
Does the venue have a bar or restaurant?
The venue does not have a bar or restaurant, so we recommend bringing your own drinks and snacks if you’d like.
Please note that alcohol is not permitted at Haw Creek Commons.
There’s a water fountain in the hallway near the bathrooms if you need to refill your water bottle.
Can I bring my kids?
Asheville Swing Night is primarily an adult event. But we do welcome youth ages 12 and up who are able to participate respectfully and safely and who are accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Because swing dancing involves fast turns, quick footwork, and a crowded dance floor, we aren’t able to accommodate younger children for safety reasons.
Where do we park?
Our venue has 35 onsite parking spots plus a huge overflow lot at Haw Creek Elementary School just around the corner.
If you park at the Elementary School please walk across the lawn to our venue and come in the front door (the downstairs door will be locked).
I'm kinda nervous - I've never danced before. Should I come to this dance?
Absolutely yes! There are always plenty of new dancers at Asheville Swing Night, and we’re a very friendly, welcoming group.
The evening starts with a beginner lesson designed to help you feel comfortable on the dance floor—it’s a great way to meet people and get your feet wet (so to speak!). We rotate partners throughout the lesson, so even if you come by yourself, you’ll have someone to dance with.
Once the social dance starts, just stand near the dance floor and people will come ask you to dance. And of course, you’re always welcome to ask others, too!
Does Asheville Swing Night have a dress code?
There isn’t a dress code, but to give you an idea - people tend to dress anywhere from casual to vintage-inspired.
You’ll see everything from jeans with a plain t-shirt or polo, to retro dresses, suspenders, or twirly skirts that move with the music.
The main thing is to wear something you can move comfortably in. You’ll be dancing and turning - so breathable fabrics and clothes that let you move freely are ideal.
If dressing up sounds fun, go for it! But if you’re most comfortable in jeans and a tee, that’s perfectly fine too. Come as you are - the goal is to have fun and feel good while you dance.
What type of shoes should I wear?
Wear comfortable shoes—ideally something with a smooth sole that lets you slide easily on the floor.
Sneakers with thick or grippy rubber soles can make turning and swiveling harder, while dress shoes or flats with a leather or suede sole work best.
Avoid high heels or anything that feels unstable.
That said, don’t stress about having the perfect shoes! If you’re new to swing dancing, just wear something comfortable and come have fun. Once you fall in love with it (and you probably will), you can look into getting a pair of dedicated dance shoes later.
Do I need a partner?
No partner needed! We rotate partners throughout the lesson and many people come on their own.
How many dancers attend Asheville Swing Night?
So far we've hosted this dance twice and had about 60 dancers each time.
There is a mix of quite a few new and newer dancers coming to try something new, as well as a lot of swing dancers who have been part of the scene for many many years.
What time should I arrive for the lesson?
The beginner lesson starts right at 7:00 PM, so we recommend arriving around 6:45 PM to check in, pay admission, and get settled before the music starts.
Coming a few minutes early also gives you a chance to meet people, change shoes if you brought dance shoes, and be ready to jump in when the lesson begins!
Is it Ok to just come watch?
Absolutely! You’re welcome to come listen to the music, watch the dancing, and soak up the atmosphere.
Is there air conditioning / what’s the temperature like?
Yes! The venue has air conditioning and fans, and we often open the windows to keep fresh air flowing.
That said, swing dancing is active—you’ll warm up quickly! We recommend wearing light, breathable clothing and bringing a water bottle.
Who are the organizers of Asheville Swing Night?
